Guide to the Goals Feature on the Tarteel App

Introduction to the Goals Feature

The Tarteel app's Goals feature is designed to assist users in their Quran memorization and review journey by creating personalized plans that are easy to follow and tailored to individual needs. Whether you are working on memorizing a specific Surah, reviewing multiple Juz', or simply maintaining a consistent connection with the Quran, the Goals feature helps you set clear intentions, track your progress, and stay on course. This guide will walk you through how to set up and use this powerful feature effectively.

Key Concepts in the Goals Feature

Balancing Simplicity and Complexity

The Goals feature in Tarteel is designed to accommodate a wide range of user workflows. While it offers powerful customization options for more complex needs, you can also keep it simple by setting basic goals with minimal setup. For example, if your focus is straightforward memorization or review, the preset goals or basic custom goals are easy to configure and follow.

However, if you have a more specific or advanced workflow in mind, Tarteel allows you to dive deeper into more complex configurations, such as multiple ranges, flexible portions, or reverse-order reviews. This flexibility ensures that users with different needs can customize their experience to fit their goals.

Preset Goals for Easy Setup

Tarteel offers preset goals to help users get started quickly. For example, selecting "Surat Al-Kahf every Friday" automatically configures all the necessary settings for you. This is a great way to familiarize yourself with the feature, as it shows you the same screen you would see when starting a custom goal, allowing you to make additional adjustments if needed.

Understanding Memorization and Review Planning

Understanding Goal Setup

Before diving into the specificities of memorization or review planning, it’s important to understand how goal-setting works in the app. Tarteel ensures that your workload is divided into manageable portions, so you can stay on track without feeling overwhelmed. Whether you're memorizing new sections or reinforcing previous learnings, Tarteel helps break down your task into manageable sessions.

Memorization Planning

When setting a memorization goal in Tarteel, the app automatically breaks down your target into manageable sessions or portions. This feature ensures that you can stay on track without feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of the task. Memorization planning involves setting your intention, choosing a specific range of the Quran to memorize, and scheduling your sessions based on your preferred pace.

Review Planning

Reviewing is just as crucial as memorization, and Tarteel provides flexible review planning options to help you reinforce what you've learned. Users can create multiple review plans, such as reviewing recently memorized sections daily or completing a full review of previously memorized portions every week.

Memorization and Review: Different but Aligned

While memorization and review currently work exactly the same in terms of how sessions are planned and tracked, they are separated within the app to help users set the correct intention and differentiate between the two processes. Memorization focuses on learning new sections of the Quran, while review emphasizes reinforcing and maintaining what has already been memorized. This separation helps users to be clear about their objectives and to stay focused on both acquiring and retaining Quranic knowledge.

Common Review Workflows

Different users have different review workflows. Here are some common examples:

  • Weekly Review: Review all memorized sections once a week.
  • Daily Juz' Review: Review one Juz' every day.

You can customize these workflows according to your needs or based on feedback from your own Quran teachers.

Setting Your Intention

Before creating a memorization or review plan, it's essential to set a clear intention. This step involves defining the specifics of your goal, including Goal Name, Action, Range, Portion, and Schedule. Each of these components maps 1-1 with how goals are structured in the app to ensure seamless functionality and progress tracking.

Key Variables

  1. Goal Name: Give your goal a unique name to help you track and manage it easily. If you don’t create a specific name, Tarteel will automatically generate one for you.
  2. Action: Choose between Memorize, Review, or Recite to specify what type of activity you’re focusing on (more on the differences between each Goal type later).
  3. Range (Bounds): Define the specific portion of the Quran you want to memorize or review. An example could be Juz' 29-30 or Surah Al-Baqarah-Surah Al-Nisa.
  4. Portion: Decide on the amount to cover in each session, such as one page, one Juz', or a set number of minutes. You can also choose not to specify a portion, keeping your sessions flexible instead. This allows Tarteel to automatically adjust the amount based on your progress (more on that later in the Flexible Goals section).
  5. Schedule: Choose how frequently you want to engage with your plan, whether daily, weekly, or on specific days like Monday and Thursday. You can also choose a No Schedule option to progress at your own pace.

How to Set Up a Goal

Setting up a goal in Tarteel is straightforward and can be customized to meet your specific needs. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

Step 1: Navigate to Goals

Open the Tarteel app and go to the Goals section on the dashboard.

Step 2: Start a New Goal

Tap on Start a New Goal to begin setting up your plan.

Step 3: Choose Your Goal Type

You have two options:

    1. Start a Custom Goal: Create a personalized goal by selecting your specific preferences for memorization or review.
    2. Pick a Suggested Goal: Choose from a list of suggested goals provided by the app, such as memorizing Juz' 30, reviewing Surah Al-Baqarah, or completing a daily Juz' review.

Framing your goal as an intention helps reinforce commitment and increases the likelihood of consistency.

Step 4: Set Your Intention

Define your intention by selecting the Range, Portion, and Schedule that align with your goal. For example:

    • Memorization Goal: "I intend to memorize 1 page from Surah Al-Kahf every week."
    • Review Goal: "I intend to review Surah Al-Mulk every day."

Step 5: Generate Your Plan

Once your intention is set, Tarteel will automatically generate a plan by dividing your selected range into manageable portions based on your schedule. This plan will serve as your roadmap to achieving your goal.

Step 6: Track Your Progress

As you complete each session, Tarteel tracks your progress and shows how much you’ve accomplished, helping you stay motivated and on track. Each session is represented by a bar, which fills up as you complete portions of your goal. The color of the bar also indicates your progress: green for completed sessions, yellow for in-progress sessions, and red for missed sessions. By tapping on each icon, you can explore detailed information about that session, including which portion was completed and the time spent.

Action Types: Review, Memorize, and Recite

The Goals feature includes three action types: Review, Memorize, and Recite. The "Recite" action differs as it captures any recitation session, regardless of whether the ayahs are hidden. In contrast, "Review" and "Memorize" only count progress when the ayahs are hidden, making them suitable for focused memorization or review sessions.

Two Main Types of Goals: Flexible vs. Portion-Based

  1. Flexible Goals: These goals focus on completing a range within a given time frame, with the app automatically readjusting the sessions if you fall behind or move ahead. This is ideal for users who need to review a large portion of memorized content periodically.
  2. Portion-Based Goals: These goals prioritize completing a set amount each day or session, without adjusting based on progress. This is typically used for consistent practices, like memorizing a specific portion daily or weekly.

When setting a goal, you can select either a flexible or portion-based approach. In the goal creation screen, after choosing your range and schedule, you’ll see an option to choose between ‘all’ (flexible) or ‘portion-based.’ Selecting ‘all’ allows the app to adjust the portions dynamically based on your progress, while ‘portion-based’ requires you to specify the exact amount (e.g., one page or one Juz') you want to cover in each session.

Understanding Portion and Range

The Portion refers to how much you aim to cover in each session (e.g., one Juz, one Surah), while the Range specifies the total content you want to cover (e.g., Juz 1-10). The type of goal you choose will determine how these are applied, with flexible goals focusing on completing the entire range within the time frame, and portion-based goals focusing on consistent daily progress.

Advanced Features: Multiple Ranges and Reverse Order

For users with more complex review goals, Tarteel allows the creation of goals with multiple ranges. This feature consolidates different sections into one goal, such as reviewing Surah Al-Fatiha, Surah Al-Kahf, and Juz' 29-30 within a single plan.

For those who prefer to memorize or review in reverse order, Tarteel supports setting goals to go backward through the Quran, starting from the end of a Surah or Juz and working towards the beginning. A common use case for this is memorizing Juz' ‘Amma in reverse order, where users may start with Surah An-Nas and work their way back to Surah An-Naba'. This method is especially helpful for memorization and is widely practiced in regions like Turkey, where reverse memorization is a common pattern.

How to Set a Reverse Order Range

  1. Navigate to the Goal Setup: Open the Tarteel app, go to the Goals section, and start setting up a new goal.
  2. Select Reverse Range: When choosing your range, you can manually set the starting and ending points. For example, to memorize Juz' ‘Amma, select Surah An-Nas as your starting point and Surah An-Naba' as your ending point.
  3. Set Your Intention: Define your goal by stating, for example, "I intend to memorize Juz' ‘Amma starting from Surah An-Nas to Surah An-Naba'."
  4. Adjust the Goal Settings: You can choose whether to keep the sessions flexible (letting the app adjust the portions based on your progress) or fixed, depending on how much you plan to memorize in each session.

Advanced Settings

Included Sessions and Goal Types

The Tarteel app provides flexibility in how sessions contribute to your goals. You can enable or disable specific session types in the Goals' advanced settings to suit your needs. Here’s how different session types can be configured:

Review/Memorize Goals: These goals track progress only when ayahs are hidden, ensuring the focus is on active recall for memorization or review.

  • Recitation with Ayahs Hidden: Any recitation session using the microphone with ayahs hidden counts toward these goals.
  • Off-Platform Session with "Recited from Memory" enabled:

Sessions performed outside the app will count towards your review and/or memorization goals only if the "Recited from Memory" option is enabled when adding the session.

Recitation Goals: These capture any recitation session, even if the ayahs are visible, making them suitable for general recitation tracking.

  • Any Recitation Session: Includes sessions where ayahs are visible.
  • Any Off-Platform Session: Includes any manually logged session performed outside the app.
  • Any Reading Session: Tracks reading progress while flipping pages without requiring hidden ayahs. This feature allows users to log sessions even when not actively reciting. Tarteel automatically tracks these sessions based on page flips, providing insight into your reading habits. Disabled by default but can be enabled in advanced settings.
  • Any Listening Session: Tracks Quran listening sessions for users focusing on auditory learning. Disabled by default but can be enabled in advanced settings.

Note: Reading and listening sessions are not applicable for review or memorization goals because these sessions focus more on comprehension and familiarity. For progress to count toward these goals, the ayahs must be hidden during recitation. This is because memorization and review rely on active recall, which is reinforced when users recite the ayahs without seeing the text. By hiding the ayahs, Tarteel ensures that you're relying on memory, thus effectively contributing to your memorization or review progress.

  1. Off-Platform Sessions: This setting allows you to manually mark progress for sessions done outside the Tarteel app.
  2. Rounding Behaviors: Controls how the app handles partial pages when setting a goal to memorize or review a specific portion daily. For instance, if your goal involves a portion that starts in the middle of a page, the app can either round up, round down, or go to the nearest full page. Rounding up allows you to progress slightly faster by completing the entire page, while rounding down ensures you don't exceed your intended workload. Going to the nearest full page strikes a balance between both options.

Completions and Khatma

In Tarteel, a "completion" is synonymous with a "khatma," marking the end of a full cycle of recitation or review. You can choose to start a new completion automatically, manually, or periodically. For example, if you aim to complete the Quran every month, enabling automatic completions will ensure your next cycle starts seamlessly. If you prefer more control, manual completions might be better suited to your pace, especially if you want to pause between completions.

Addressing Common User Scenarios

  1. Prophetic Completion: For users who want to complete the Quran weekly, Tarteel offers a prophetic completion setting, which divides the Quran according to the method used by the Sahaba, following the structure mentioned in hadith.
  2. By Date Goals: This feature is useful for setting goals with a specific deadline, such as completing the memorization of a Surah by a particular date. Teachers might find this feature particularly useful, in the sense that they can use this to assign students specific portions to memorize or review by a certain date.
  3. Flexible and Non-Flexible Goals: If you have a flexible goal, Tarteel will adjust the remaining sessions based on your progress. If you're ahead, the portions will be reduced; if you're behind, the portions will increase. Non-flexible goals stick to the schedule regardless of progress, which is ideal for users who want to maintain a strict routine.
  4. No Schedule (Any Time Option): For users who prefer not to follow a strict schedule, Tarteel offers a No Schedule option. This allows you to progress through your goal at your own pace, without specific daily or weekly commitments. It's ideal for users with varying availability or those who want complete flexibility.
  5. No Portion (Any Amount Option): Similarly, the No Portion option allows you to avoid specifying the exact amount you want to cover in each session. With this option, you can memorize or review as much as you like, whenever you engage with the app, without feeling restricted by a preset amount.

Progress Tracking

After setting up a goal, you can track your progress through the bars and icons on the app. This feature helps you visualize both your short-term and long-term progress, allowing for adjustments to stay on track.

Conclusion

The Goals feature in Tarteel is designed to help you achieve your Quran memorization and review objectives with ease and consistency. By setting clear intentions, customizing your plan, and staying committed, you can make steady progress on your spiritual journey. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner, Tarteel’s Goals feature is an invaluable tool to help you stay on track and achieve your Quranic goals. There are additional advanced settings, such as off-platform sessions and multiple ranges, that can further enhance your experience. Explore the app’s full range of features to find what works best for your unique journey. Happy memorizing!
