Getting started with Testing

Testing lets you check your memorization, and we’ve designed it to work like flash cards. The app shows you a card with the first few words of a passage, and you recite the rest from memory. Once that card is done, the next card with a new question will appear.

How to Start a Test

Image

  1. From the Quran reader, tap and hold the green mode button at the bottom of the screen and select Test.

  2. On the “Test” screen, tap the play button to begin. The test uses the same range as your last test. If this is your first test, it starts on Your Memorization — the parts of the Quran you've marked as memorized in Tarteel.

    • If you haven't added your memorization to Tarteel yet, your first test uses a starter range instead: the last pages of Juz 30 (from Surah Az-Zalzalah to Surah An-Nas). After your first test, the app asks you to add your memorization.

  3. A short countdown plays, and your first question card appears.

How a Question Works

Image

Here is what you see during a question:

  1. Hint words: your starting prompt

  2. Lines you have not recited yet

  3. Surah name and verse number

  4. Eye icon: shows or hides the surah name and verse number

  5. Next: skips to the next question

Recite onward from memory. As you recite correctly, the hidden words are revealed on screen.

Keep reciting until the end of the question. A question often continues past the first ayah, so don't stop when you reach the end of an ayah. You can see how much is left from the progress bar along the bottom edge of the card and the remaining line markers on the card. When you complete the question, you'll hear a sound and the card changes color (green if recited correctly, red if there was a mistake), and the next question appears.

To skip a question, swipe the card right or left or tap Next.

If You Can’t Remember the Next Word

You have three ways to reveal words you can't remember:

  • Tap the single arrow to reveal the next word.

  • Tap the double arrow to reveal the rest of the ayah.

  • Double-tap anywhere on the question card to reveal the next word

Keep in mind that each reveal counts as a mistake for that question. See How does test scoring work?

The Eye Icon

Tap the eye icon on the question card to show or hide the surah name and verse number of the current question.

Note: It will also hide the verse marker of the ayah on the card you are being tested on (until you recite past it) as well as the name of the next surah in the question (e.g. the prompt began in Surah Al-Ikhlas and the question length is long enough to include Surah Al-Falaq).

Default Settings

When using testing for the first time, Tests start with these defaults, and all of them can be changed in the Test Settings

  • 10 questions per session

  • 2 lines per question

  • Questions continue to the end of the ayah

  • Temporary Session is toggled off
