How do I change the length of my test and how many questions it asks

You can change your Test Settings to control how long a test runs, how much you're asked to recite in each question, and whether your activity gets saved or not. This article shows you where the test settings are and what each one does.

How to Open Test Settings

On the Testing screen, tap on either of the “Session Duration” and “Question Length” buttons or tap the sliders icon. All of these open the Test Settings screen. When you finish changing your settings, tap Confirm at the bottom of the screen to save them.

Session Duration

Session Duration controls when your test ends. Choose one of three modes:

  • Questions: the test ends after a set number of questions. The default is 10, with presets for 10, 15, or 20, or set a custom number from 1 to 99.

  • Time: the test ends after a set amount of time. Presets are 5, 10, or 15 minutes, or set a custom time from 1 to 60 minutes.

  • Unlimited: no limit at all. The test continues until you end it yourself.

Question Length

Question Length sets how much you recite in each question, measured in lines. You can choose a preset option (Short, Medium, or Long), or slide the slider to pick the number of lines you wish each question to test you on.

The Short / Medium / Long presets are just shortcuts. Moving the slider and picking a preset do the same thing.

  • Short = 2 lines

  • Medium = 5 lines

  • Long = 12 lines

Extend Question to Ayah's End

This toggle is on by default: each question continues to the end of its final ayah, even if that goes past the line count. If you turn it off, questions can stop mid-ayah at a pause mark (waqf).

If this toggle is on, a question can sometimes run longer than the number of lines you chose.

Sound and Vibration

Tarteel plays a sound and vibrates when you complete a question. You can adjust those settings in the App Settings under Testing.

Temporary Session

Turning on the Temporary Session toggle means that NOTHING from that testing session is recorded. The session won’t show up in your activity and any mistakes made won't be saved to your history. This is handy when you're letting a friend or family member try a test on your device. However, if you are trying to test how well you know the portion you are testing yourself on and want to keep mistakes made saved in your mistake highlights so you can improve your memorization of those areas, leave the Temporary Session toggle off.

You can turn it on in two places. Use the Temporary Session toggle on the Test Settings screen, or tap the hourglass icon at the top of the Test screen, next to the "Test" title. A short message confirms your choice: "Activity from this session won't be saved."

During a test, a "Temporary" label appears at the top of the screen. The label is a reminder that the session is not being saved. It is not a button, so you cannot switch Temporary Session on or off while a test is running. Change it before you start.
